I want to tell you about a walnut cabinet, because it changed how I run estimates.
A customer wanted to pull out one cabinet in their kitchen and replace it with walnut. Just the one. They could not picture it. I would describe it, they would nod, and I could tell they were not seeing it. That is a bad place to start a job from, because if you cannot picture it, you cannot approve it, and if you cannot approve it, nobody is comfortable.
So I made them a picture
I put their actual kitchen into ChatGPT and had it render the change. Sent it over. They wrote back and said they loved it.
Then it got interesting. I took the dimensions off that image and told them to print me out shop drawings at those dimensions. They did. I built it from those drawings.
You cannot tell which one is the AI picture and which one is the cabinet sitting in their kitchen. And it saved me four or five hours of design work I would have billed nobody for.
I do this on every bid now
I had another customer who wanted her kitchen changed but did not want to spend much money. She had about ten ideas and no way to choose between them. I put all ten in and showed her the versions side by side. She picked one almost immediately, because for the first time she could actually see them.
That is the whole thing. Most people are not indecisive. They just cannot see it yet.
I have used it for screen porches, for cabinet swaps, for full kitchen layouts. I render the change before I even send the estimate.
Why I think most contractors are not doing this
I do not know many other guys in my trade using it. The contractors who show up with polished presentations and nice pamphlets are usually the expensive ones, and most of us just do not have a design department.
This closes that gap. I am a remodeler, not a designer, and now I can hand you something to look at before you commit money to it.
Where it does not help
I want to be straight about this, because AI pictures can oversell.
A render is not a promise. It does not know what is behind your wall, it does not know your budget, and it will happily show you something beautiful that would cost three times what you want to spend. What it does is get us talking about the same thing, and then I price the real version.
It also does not replace going and looking at cabinets in person. I still send people to Maggie at Ryko Kitchen and Bath in Frederick, because a screen does not tell you what a door feels like or how a finish looks in your own light. She will pull three or four options based on what you tell her and put them up on screen in your kitchen.
Use the picture to narrow it down. Use your hands to decide.
If you have got a change you cannot quite picture, tell me about it and I will show you what it looks like before either of us talks about money.
